War Memorial Garden Gets a Much-Needed Makeover

Ashchurch Rural Parish Council would like to say a huge thank you to the Babcock volunteers who recently gave their time to help clear the War Memorial garden

Published: 6 August 2026

The team worked incredibly hard throughout the day to tackle the dense and heavily overgrown brambles and ivy, much of which had become well established along the boundaries of the garden. Their efforts have completely transformed the area, clearing away years of overgrowth and allowing the War Memorial and surrounding garden to be seen much more clearly.

The clearance has not only made the garden look considerably more open and cared for but has also given us a much better understanding of the space available and how we can develop it. With the brambles and ivy removed, we can now properly consider where new planting, bulbs and additional features could be introduced to create a beautiful, welcoming and fitting setting for the War Memorial.

With the area now cleared, plans for new planting are underway. We are looking at a selection of hardy, low-maintenance plants and bulbs that will provide colour and interest throughout the year, while creating a fitting and respectful setting for the War Memorial.

We would also like to extend our thanks to J.Booth Garden Services, who kindly took away all of the garden waste following the clearance.

We are looking forward to the next stage of the project and continuing to improve and care for this important community space. 🌱🌸

Thank you to everyone who has supported the project so far – your time, hard work and generosity are greatly appreciated.
