Council Grants Funding to Tackle Local Water Pollution
Ashchurch Rural Parish Council is pleased to announce it has awarded a grant to Safe Avon to support vital water quality monitoring across our local brooks
Published: 17 February 2026
The decision follows an in-depth and sobering presentation given to the Council in January by Geoff Sallis of Safe Avon. Geoff highlighted the growing concerns regarding sewage dumping and chemical pollution within the Carrant Brook and the Tirle brook—two key waterways that run through our parish.
Supporting Local Action

To help combat this issue, the Parish Council has agreed to provide funding for the purchase of additional water testing kits. These kits allow for regular, scientific sampling of the water to track pollution levels and identify “hotspots” where the brooks are being most affected.
By gathering this data, Safe Avon can provide the evidence needed to hold polluters to account and advocate for the health of both our local ecosystem and communities.
How You Can Help: Volunteers Needed!
Data is most effective when it is collected regularly. Safe Avon are looking for local volunteers who are interested in becoming “Citizen Scientists” by helping to monitor and test water samples along the brooks in Ashchurch Rural Parish.
- No experience is necessary: Training on how to use the kits will be provided.
- Flexible commitment: You can help monitor a stretch of the brook near your home at a time that suits you.
If you have a passion for the environment and want to help protect our local wildlife and waterways, please get in touch with the ARPC or Safe Avon to find out more.
